posted in Architecture, Art, Design, Digital, Fashion, Film, Illustration, Music, Motion, Photography, by Daniel Dittmar on 10th November 2011 SOYA 365

Soya is back, this year with a tweak to the name and concept. Soya 365 will be run as a year round initiative with each category closing every month; great news for those whose talents are spread across multiple disciplines!

The range of categories have also expanded, with eleven creative fields on the burner. There are some exciting destinations for the winners, including South by Southwest, Cannes Lions Awards, and London Design Festival.

The first category closes in 28 days, time to don those creative hats.

Sheargold

posted in Architecture, Industrial, by Damien Aistrope on 11th October 2011 Sheargold

The Red Bull office in Sydney is definitely one of my favourite 'meeting' experiences to date. A visual overload of light, texture, humour and general sense of fun encapsulated perfectly by Matthew Sheargold - an award winning designer who fluctuates between interior, product and furniture design for the last 17 years. Beautiful products and projects to be explored.

To kick off these postings its good to set the context by zooming out... with a  look at the work of 4 UK architects /themed around a concern for the art of making things // its interesting to see how a particular social climate is sometimes reflected in its physicality.

"Somewhere out there in a world slightly beyond my comprehension is an ever-growing legion of people involved in architecture and urban design who seem to have spent more time in front of computer screens than at work benches, quarries, sewing machines or with beginners’ toolboxes. Why? Because the lack of craft around us is becoming not just heart-breaking, but jaw-dropping." Jonathon Glancey (UK).

"If I was to put my finger on one thing, it was that my father was very interested in making things. He was a carpenter in his spare time and we made a lot of furniture together. I have always been very able at making things. My motivation was less intellectual than Adam's, more emotional and physical." St John (one half of Caruso St John).

Koichi Takada Architects

posted in Architecture, by Justin Fox on 10th June 2011 Koichi Takada Architects

Japanese-born, Sydney-based architect Koichi Takada does a great job of incorporating nature into his work. Walking into his "Cave Restaurant" (currently Sushi Train in Maroubra) is like walking into the mouth of a whale, which suits the sushi theme quite nicely! Be sure to check out "Mass Greening" too for some interesting process slides.
