For the uninitiated, Georgia Perry is an Australian graphic artist and accessories designer. She has been creating colourful and collectable items since 2014, inspired by her love of pop culture and souvenirs. With over 130 global stockists for her own line of products, she is now conquering the world of retail with a beautiful physical store in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Showcasing a huge array of carefully curated products from around the globe, KIOSK could literally be your one stop shop for presents this Christmas and next.
For those who aren't familiar with your work, how did you get your start in the creative industries and begin your personal namesake product line?
After graduating from a Visual Communication degree in 2007, I worked in a number of small design studios in London and Sydney for 5 or 6 years before going out on my own. I always knew I wanted to work for myself, but never imagined I'd end up designing products. The product line just started as a way to make a bit of extra cash on the side, but it's since turned into my main business – which I'm really happy about!
What made you decide that a physical shop was the next step?
Really it was the space itself – I just spotted this perfect, empty store front while out on a walk one morning and knew I had to have it. I'd been toying with the idea of opening a physical space for about a year, but never thought I'd actually do it! We've been here for 3 months though now, and so far it seems like the right decision.
We absolutely love your store fit out. How did you go about conceptualising and executing the fit-out and did you collaborate with any other creatives from other disciplines?
I designed and fitted out the whole store myself. It nearly killed me! But I couldn't have done it without the help of my partner, Dave. Seriously though, I never want to set foot inside a Bunnings again.
What are the products you were most excited to be able to stock?
There are so many fun things and independent brands that I love / admire and hadn't been able to find in Australia before, so being able to curate it all in one place (and pair unexpected things together) is so exciting. I like that we have products from every category from jewellery and art to homewares and food.
What's next for yourself and KIOSK?
We're gearing up for our first Christmas with a physical store which is going to be pretty interesting! But after that, hopefully a rest and a reboot for 2018.
