Field Trip 10 Qs WBYK

16.07.13

Design, Events, Illustration

I've known these two for some time now and (mild disclaimer) I do call them some of my closest friends. Sonny and Biddy from WBYK are two of the nicest, hardest working, fun and talented people you will ever meet. I mean ever word too, no lie. So understandably, it makes me extremely proud to have them part of Field Trip in Sydney for 2013. You should already know of their work, so let's ask them our 10 Qs so you can get to know them personally before their performance on August 30th.

1. State your name, location, medium, and the last meal you ate.
Sonny Day + Biddy Maroney
Newtown
Pencils + pens + computers
Delicious prawn + muscles + fish risotto Sonny cooked last night.

2 - What are you working on at the moment?
We've got a good mix of jobs on at the moment - a couple of album covers, a couple of gig posters, a couple of animations, a couple of coffee cups and bag designs, a couple of group exhibitions to create work for, a couple of walls in a sound studio that we'll paint murals on, and a couple of comic books we're working on (very slowly). We're enjoying that our work's been more varied than usual this year - doing some work for the Opera House, the Powerhouse, the Joan and ICE in Paramatta is keeping us pretty inspired.

3. Describe the last person you saw do a live talk that really inspired you.
That Dave Grohl one's pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efv0Y5Fs7m4 We weren't physically in the room, but he's definitely alive.

4. Name a tool of the trade which you use, digital or otherwise, that is absolutely essential to your workflow.
Time Machine. Oh, my, god, Time Machine.

5. What are the top three tracks in your 25 most played iTunes playlist?
Office iTunes: Mirror's Image - The Horrors New Ice Age - The Horrors Who Can Say - The Horrors
Sonny's iPod: Raging lung -The Knife Leave No Cross Unturned - Darkthrone I'm In It - Kanye West

6. If you could boil down the most important lesson you've learned as a professional creative to three words, what would they be?
Enjoy the weekend.

7. What is your favourite website for comic relief?
http://thecatsmustbecrazy.com
http://fuckyeahdementia.com

8. Can you tell us a bit about your plans for your Field Trip performance?
We're going to set a vague plan and then make it up as we go. We'll try and set a simple brief then tackle it a couple of different ways - as an illustration for print, as a screen-printed t-shirt or poster graphic. Since there's two of us there's always a couple of different ways to everything. Then we'll fight to the death to see who wins.

9. What do you hope the Audience will take away from your presentation?
Communication and structure are king.

10. Who is your daddy and what does he do?
Ross is a retired school teacher and movie projectionist, and a local historian. He enjoys talking to the elderly and collecting movie posters and comic books.
Gary was the best.

Thanks guys. Want to see them in action? I know I do. Go grab a ticket for Field Trip this August 30 while the tickets are cheap. Early bird is ending in just a couple of weeks.
