10 things my hip hop magazine taught me

From what I can tell, a lot of you who visit Australian INfront are running or thinking about starting up your own ventures. It's an awesome thing to do. So, I thought I'd share my own experience in setting up and running a hip hop magazine - mostly from my bedroom.

The magazine was called Stealth.

And, please, I'd love to hear your experiences with your own ventures in the comments below.

Great stuff Mark. Is the magazine still happening?

Can I ask, how did you make the decision to jump to Adland over the magazine? I'm assuming financial needs had something to do with it?

Oh how I miss the days of Stealth :(

Great magazine and I still have a few old copies sitting around! Surprisingly theres quite a few of us designery types that are into hip-hop, I guess what they say about great minds thinking alike is true.

Awesome article too.

Hi Michael - it's been a few years since I published an issue. Mags are in the wars right now. As for adland, since I was 20 I've been in agencies of some kind. I used to work on my mag at night. I did have a year or two focusing almost exlcusively on the mag in my mid-20s though. Publishing is a tough gig - especially something as niche as underground hip hop... in the Southern Hemisphere. So, yes, having to provide for my family has definitely guided some of my thinking.

@Jamesb - Thanks for the note. Doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of designery types are into hip hop. It's cool like that.
