Your right brain is a wonderful thing.

Largely misunderstood, it makes conceptual, visual and word connections that people who don't do what you do for a living often can't make. And, because of that, it earns you a living.

Thing is, your clients are probably extreme left-brain types. The rational, processes, systems and structure matter to them. And while they admire and understand the value of your right brain, the truth is that it also probably scares them a little.

The chasm between the right and left can often play out in frustrating ways: the right-brained gets frustrated because the...

Great article, it interests me mainly because I want bigger budgets on the projects I work on, and this suggests ways to get that, or at least reason with the client.

My main query is with getting the data though. Finding out the companies sales, how you could improve on that, what sort of market share they have, is there potential etc. I think a lot of marketing types wouldn't want to give up this info as they'd feel as if you're doing their job.

Hey Pete

Thanks for the comment. Marketers may feel nervous about sharing data, for sure, but it depends on whether they have it, trust you with it, think you'll understand it and can do something with it or about it. Some may not want to talk about specific unit numbers but may be happy to share %'s. Either way, numbers are a good place to start any creative project so they know you're in it for them - not just your own creative expression (which is still important).

I'd be surprised if they felt you were doing their job. Marketers bring in agencies, partners, people all the time to get things done. That's part of their remit.

Let me know how you go!

Thanks Mark

Haven't been able to put your ideas to the test just yet. Unfortunately most of the jobs aren't selling something. Gotta keep climbing the ladder and attracting better work ;)
