I think I need to get used to it for a while before I can assess as I used it a lot previously and so now it just feels "different".

there's good and bad.
it definitely feels more like an app.
the images are far too close together to be of any real use in quick scans.
it's also a shame you need to roll over to get metadata/details, though as Dave says this could be a 'getting used to it thing'.
also don't know why we need to have 'pages' markers (though that may be cause some people see the old version.)

Lightbox popups when you get to the result page? Not sure about that.

Smart move sticking the Google frame on the right when you click through, that's where the spare real estate seems to be these days.

And it's a fake lightbox too.
The rollover image enlargements could be larger too.

This started happening when I was logged into google a couple of weeks ago. It's much better, better use of space, more images per page = win.
The lightbox is annoying, I'd rather it anchor me to where the image is on the site than do that.

I really don't like having to scroll over every image to see details. I don't care much for the larger image and it's made itself less useful / more annoying for me.
For me google image search is often about finding a site for another reason, not just because I want to look at or borrow a photo.
Good for porn.
