Dan (OP) - just go into with an open mind. People being required to switch either way (Mac - PC or PC - Mac) who are expecting to hate it, will hate it. People assuming it will be a bit of an adjustment, but fine in the end, will be alright.
Since it's your office computer I assume you won't personally have to take responsibility for the security etc so just use your common sense about suspicious emails/websites and you'll be fine.
And yeah, you might find some things (in fact quite a lot of things) faster.
And I'm saying that as a Mac user.

I have only built one Wordpress site, but went with building on top of Starkers as I much prefer the idea of adding to a theme rather than overwriting what's in it.
On the responsive themes side - I love the idea of responsive design, and love the challenge of thinking that way when designing a site. But what's one of the main issues facing mobile browsing? Connection speeds. So to me it doesn't make sense to be taking large image files meant for display on a big screen, fast connection, and scaling them down to fit on the slower mobile web.
For that reason I agree with Dave that a separate mobile site still makes sense a lot of the time.
