RE: How affordable is graphic design in Australia? on 28th January 2012 @ 6.47 PM in Discussion
@peteshand I find it interesting that you have said they avoid small businesses. I have had great experiences working with small businesses.
I believe that all businesses deserve good design, even if they have a limited budget. The trick is to really listen to their needs and understand where they are coming from. If they have called/emailed you/your company they did so (most likely) because they like your work.
I recently read a good piece about bargain logo sites here:

P.S
It makes sense that spammers would target a thread – and forum in general – like this. Rich relevant content, updating constantly, very search engine friendly. Doesn't make it less annoying though.

Where are you based? I was going to recommend http://www.rizzeria.com/ as I have been there before to print and they were very helpful and affordable. It looks like they're out of action at the moment though. They might know some people though.
You could try http://www.bloodandthunder.com.au/ also.

Umm, big picture, one site is bringing awareness to slavery's prevalence, the others by a company that uses slave labour. In saying that I wear Nike shoes and I use Apple products.
The slavery footprint site is great in the way it uses good design and animation to deliver facts that most people are oblivious too, facts that are often uncomfortable.

RE: February Book Reviews on 01st February 2012 @ 9.26 PM in Talks
Welcome Tiana Vasiljev, really like the look of that Dieter Rams book.
My favourite design book would have to be The Art of Looking Sideways. More than a design book it is a tribute to curiosity and visual playfulness. It's a book that doesn't have a start, middle and end, but it doesn't need one. You can open it at any page and be inspired by the visual world and the peculiarities and contradictions therein.
Written/collated/designed by the late Alan Fletcher, it's a wonderful resource. It should also be mandatory reading.
